Women who married before 04/27/1983 to a man who comes later recognized as Italian from birth, have the right to automatic recognition of citizenship:

the previous Italian law provided that the wife had to follow the husband’s citizenship.

It will therefore be necessary to produce only the complete birth certificate original and recent.

This automatic recognition is also allowed for women who are divorced from an Italian citizen after the aforementioned date or if the Italian husband has died in the meantime.

Men, whatever the date of marriage to an Italian, and women who married an Italian after 27/04/1983, do not have the automatic right to citizenship Italian.

These spouses of Italian will, however, be able to apply for citizenship by marriage (Italian NATURALIZATION) provided that the spouse is already an Italian citizen, that the marriage certificate has already been registered in an Italian municipality, and that the marriage bond is still pending course.

Italian naturalization is not equivalent to the recognition of Italian citizenship iure sanguinis and could result in the LOSS of Brazilian citizenship.

For the concession to the spouse of an Italian citizen, the expiry of the term of three years from the marriage or the date of purchase for naturalization or repurchase.

These terms are reduced by half (18 months) in the presence of children.

At the time of the adoption of the provision for conferring Italian citizenship, no dissolution or annulment must have occurred o cessation of the civil effects of the marriage and the personal separation of the spouses must not exist.

The marriage certificate must be transcribed in the civil status registers of the Italian municipality.

As a condition, the possession of an adequate knowledge of the Italian language is required, not less than level B1 through the acquisition of a qualification issued by a public or equivalent educational institution or a certification issued by a certifying body (belonging to the unified CLIQ certification system (Italian Language Quality Certification):
